David Villa scores twice to help his team beat Vancouver Whitecaps

New York City FC managed to come back from 1-0 to beat Vancouver Whitecaps 3-2 thanks to two goals from David Villa.

It was the Whitecaps who took the lead as early as the 1st minute when Rivero took advantage of a too frequent error from City’s goalkeeper to open the scoring.

However, New York City FC will come back into the game and keep possession well. They will be rewarded in the 35th minute when David Villa will score from long range. He benefited from a superb pass from Khiry Shelton.

Villa will add another goal 6 minutes later when he will connect well with an Andrea Pirlo’s corner to give his team a well-deserved lead.

After the break, the Whitecaps will try to come back into the game and will put City under pressure. As it was too often this season, New York City FC will concede a goal when under pressure. Bolanos will be awarded a penalty. The City goalkeeper will save the first shot from Bolanos but will not be able to do anything on the rebound. DC United’s slow start to the season Continued

DC United’s slow start to the season continued after a disappointing 1-1 draw with San Jose Earthquakes.

The club are still waiting for their first win of the campaign. They have managed to draw three and lose two of their opening five matches. Against San Jose Earthquakes, it looked like the team was going to end the disappointing start to the campaign after they took the lead in the 34th minute through Nyarko. The team held onto this advantage for almost the entire match before conceding a late equaliser to Jahn. The draw leaves the club just one place above the bottom and puts serious pressure on manager Ben Olsen.

Astonishingly, DC United have not managed to win against San Jose since 1998. Back then, head coach Ben Olsen was part of the team as a player in his first campaign at the club.Olsen admitted after the match that the players were very much looking forward to getting the first win of the campaign. This would have helped them to take a monkey off their back. United, along with Columbus Crew, are the only two teams not to have won a single game in the 2016 campaign. The club are up against Vancouver Whitecaps, who are unbeaten in the last three, in the next league encounter. Continue reading “DC United’s slow start to the season Continued”

The winning streak of San Jose Earthquakes has extended to 4 matches

Dominic Kinnear and his squad are going through a fine form as they have secured their 4th consecutive victory after defeating LA Galaxy with the only goal of the entire match being scored by Shea Salinas at the 18th minute.

Another noteworthy accomplishment that Dominic Kinnear has achieved with his team besides the successive string of victories is the clean sheets that they have secured as San Jose Earthquakes has managed to not concede a single goal in any of these 4 past matches of their winning streak.

This string of victories is what San Jose Earthquakes needed in order to bounce back from the disastrous campaign that they were going through back in July when they couldn’t win a single match and lost all of their matches of that month. It was a losing streak which originated on July 2nd after Dominic Kinnear’s team lost against LA Galaxy and couldn’t win a single match until August 15 when they defeated Colorado Rapids. Mauro Rosales has stated that his team are looking to balance attacking football

Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Mauro Rosales has stated that his team are looking to balance attacking football with the ability to pick up results as well. Vancouver have been one of the best teams to watch in the MLS under the regime of Carl Robinson.

However, this beautiful football has not exactly brought results to the team, as they have not been unable to convert a chances more often than not. The poor efficiency in terms of finishing has left the team still searching for a position as the table leaders. Ahead of the game against Sporting Kansas City,Rosales says that the team will now look to be more efficient.

There has to be a huge turnaround in terms of home form in order for Vancouver to sustain their position in the final series. The team has managed only two wins over the last four matches. It has been a story of the campaign. However, Robinson has seen his team perform well in away matches, although they only recently suffered a 2-1 defeat against Colorado Rapids. Repeating the away form in front of their own supporters will be the key for Vancouver now. There are suggestions that Robinson may adopt a different tactics for the game against Sporting Kansas City. Portland Timbers manager Caleb Porter says that his team should be much more clinical when it comes to taking the chances.

He has identified improving the attack as a key area in order to revive the club’s form. Portland have been sitting just one place above the bottom due to inconsistent form. In the last five matches, they have had wins against New York City FC and Montréal Impact but they have also suffered a disappointing results against the likes of Seattle Sounders and Houston Dynamo.Porter says that the team should also be looking at creating more opportunities for the strikers.

Even though the 3-1 defeat against Houston Dynamo does not sound very bad, it could have been a victory by an even bigger margin for Houston. Further, Portland managed to score from the only shot on target they had in the entire 90 minutes. Ahead of the match against Toronto FC on May 25,Porter says that his team should start playing with much more creativity than they have done in recent weeks. After having averaged less than a goal per game, it is not surprising thatPorter finds his team in the ninth position.
